GIRMIT DAY / GIRMIT DIWAS
Girmit day is celebrated in memory of Indian ancestors who were the very first settlers in Fiji. The first ship of Indian people had landed Fiji on 14th May 1879 and this day is remembered as GIRMIT Day / GIRMIT Diwas. These Indian settlers were called Girmitiyas. More info on girmit.org
Programs and prayers are organized on this day across Fiji and New Zealand at community centers and temples, to pay our respect and honor Girmitiya ancestors.
