IMPORTANCE OF THIS FESTIVAL
This is a mid-winter festival of Indian subcontinent celebrated by various religions including Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain. This day position of Sun moves from Sagittarius (धनु राशि) to Capricorn (मकर राशि) on its celestial path. This day is beginning of Spring season in northern hemisphere and also celebrated as “Harvest Festival” in India and Nepal.
The same festival has different names and type of celebrations in different states of India. Kite Festival of Gujarat state is very famous.
The famous Kumbh Mela (कुंभ मेला) is also held on Makar Sankranti (मकर संक्रान्ति) every 12 years. Hindus gather in large numbers to take a holy dip at Ganga Sagar (गंगा सागर) on this day every year.
In Southern states of India, this festival is known as Pongal (Surya Pongal / Thai Pongal)
In Assam state of India, this festival is celebrated as Magh Bihu (Bhogali Bihu / Maghar Domahi) and is dedicated to Agni (Lord of Fire)
