17th Oct 2018: Durga Ashthmi, Hom Ashthmi, 8th Lunar day (Tithi Ashtami / Aatham from 16th Oct 5.45pm till 17th Oct 8.20pm as per Auckland time)
18th Oct 2018: Maha Navmi, 9th Lunar day (Tithi Navmi starts from 17th Oct 8.21pm till 18th Oct 11pm as per Auckland time)
19th Oct 2018: Vijaya Dashmi, Dussera (Tithi Dashmi starts on 18th Oct 11PM and goes upto 20th Oct 3.30AM. That means 19th Oct full 24 hours is Dashmi tithi)
Navratri means Nine Nights. The festival is celebrated with Prayers and traditional dances. There are many temples (Mandir / मन्दिर / गुरुद्वारा) and associations in New Zealand organizing various programs during Navratri. Navaratri is nine days festival, when we worship Goddess Durga with prayers, mata ki chowki (माता की चौकी), Durga Puja, devotional songs and traditional dance called “Raas Garba”. This is one of the most popular festival across India, with unique traditional celebrations in Bengal and Gujarat. The Navaratri festival this year as per New Zealand time is from 10th October 2018 to 18th October 2018. Durga Ashtami is on 17th Oct, Maha Navmi on 18th Oct and Dussera on 19th Oct.
GARBA – DANDIA:
“Raas” or “Dandiya Raas” (डान्डिया रास) or “Raas Garba” (रास गरभा) is the traditional folk dance form of Gujarat & Rajasthan states of India. It is the featured dance of Navratri evening celebrations. It started from Gujarat and now one can see these dance in almost every city in India and entire world.
Raas Dandiya is organized in all major cities as part of Navratri celebrations in New Zealand. There are many Garba Dandia programs before and after navratri. Below are few of them.
