Usually followed in northern part of India (Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh,  etc).

21st July – 19th Aug 2020: श्रावण मास (अमावास्यन्त / अमांत) Shravan Month (Amant / South & West states of India). Shravan calculated after no moon day (called Amavasyant / Amant) is from 21st July – 19th Aug. This calendar is followed in central and southern part of Indian (Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Telangana).

LENT and Great Lent 2020

Lent 2020 as per Liturgical Calendar and Roman Catholicism, starts on Ash Wednesday, 26th Feb and ends day after Good Friday which is Holy Saturday 11th  April. Easter (Western or Orthodox Easter) is on 19th April. Lent period is of 46 days. Out of these, Lenten Fast is observed for 40 days because Sunday is not fasting day.  Lent fast is observed in commemoration of the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. The last day of Lent period depends on Christian denomination and/or local custom. It varies from Holy Thursday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday or at the midnight between them. Meat and meat products are avoided during the fast period.

Orthodox Christian observes Great Lent which is from 2nd March upto 18th April. Palm Sunday is on 5th April and Orthodox Easter (Pascha) is on 19th April.

Ramadan (Ramzaan / Ramjan) Month / रमज़ान 2020

Ramadan in NZ started from Sat, 25th Apr as per moon sight. Ramadan (pronounced Ramzaan in Indian subcontinent) is the holiest month of the year for Muslims. Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) on the night of Laylat Al Qadr. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, Ramadan is from 25th April and lasts for one complete Moon cycle which is approximately 29 or 30 days.

Fasting is observed by adult Muslims from dawn to dusk every day throughout Ramadan. Those who are ill, elderly, diabetic, pregnant, menstruating, with health issues or breast-feeding are not required to fast. Eid festival is celebrated at the end of Ramadan month. In Indian subcontinent it is called Eid-Ul-Fitr or Mithi Eid (मीठी ईद). Prayer time may vary as per Moon time, please refer to local prayer hall / Mosque for details. There are many websites which provide location based prayer time. Ramadan Kareem. Happy Ramadan.

अधिक मास / पुर्षोत्तम मास Adhik Month / Purshottam Month 2020

Adhik Maas in 2020 is from 18th Sep to 16th Oct/17th Oct as per Auckland local time and coordinates: Adhik Maas (English translation is Extra Month) is the month inserted to Lunar Year about every 32.5 months to keep the Lunar and Solar year aligned.

Adhik Maas (Masa) is also known as Purshottam Maas, Londa Maas, Mala Maas (मल मास), Dharmau Mahino and Malimmacha. Adhik Maas is NOT considered good for wedding or moving into new house (Gruh Pravesh / गृह प्रवेश). Various religious programs and special prayers are organised during the month at all the temples.

Adhik Masa as per Astronomy:
Moon takes 27.3 days to orbit around Earth. Earth takes 365.2422 days to orbit around Sun. However, Moon has to travel 2.2 days extra to line up with Earth and Sun to become full Moon again, due to the curve of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. This creates gap of 10.87 days per year between Lunar Year (354.372 days) and Sun Year (365.2422 days). To compensate this gap, an extra month is added after about every 32.5 months. This is seen in Hindu/Indian Lunar, Jewish, Buddhist Calendars.

Disclaimer: Though all the precautions are taken to calculate exact Festival Holidays Calendar 2020 (Christian, Jews, Parsi, Chinese) / Tithi or Lunar day (Hindu, Sikh, Buddisht, Jain, Muslim, Parsi) as per Auckland and/or New Zealand Standard Time, there may be some differences across multiple sites / publications. This may be because of variation in calculating Sun Rise/Set and Moon Rise/Set timings.

Indian calendar (Panchang) explanation: First day after no Moon day (अमावस्या) is considered here as first day of Hindu Month. This is called Amant Calendar (अमान्त पंचांग). In few parts of India first day of Hindu Month is considered on one day after Full Moon (पूर्णिमा) and the calendar is known as Purnimant Calendar (पूर्णिमान्त पंचांग). Only month name changes in these two methods. Tithi still remains the same. For example, if the tithi is Shukla paksh Chaturthi (शुक्ल पक्ष चतुर्थी), it remains same in both the methods. We are committed to provide accurate information on our portal, however, we do not take any responsibility on accuracy of the calendar, events or Panchang published here.
