श्रावण मास / Shravan Month 2018

29th July – 26th August 2018: श्रावण मास (पूर्णिमान्त) Shravan Month (Purnimant / Northern states of India). As per first day of the month calculated after full moon day. Usually followed in northern part of India (Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh etc)

12th Aug – 9th Sep 2018: श्रावण मास (अमावास्यन्त / अमांत) Shravan Month (Amant / Southern states of India). Shravan calculated after no moon day (called Amavasyant / Amant) is from 12th Aug – 9th Sep. This calendar is followed in central and southern part of Indian (Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerala).

Ramadan (Ramzaan / Ramjan) Month / रमज़ान 2018

15/16th May – 16th June (dates may vary by a day or two depending on Moon sighting): Ramadan (pronounced Ramzaan in Indian subcontinent) is the holiest month of the year for Muslims. Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) on the night of Laylat Al Qadr. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, Ramadan is starting from 15th May and lasts for one complete Moon cycle which is approximately 29 or 30 days.

Fasting is observed by adult Muslims from dawn to dusk every day throughout Ramadan. Those who are ill, elderly, diabetic, pregnant, menstruating, with health issues or breast-feeding are not required to fast. Eid festival is celebrated at the end of Ramadan month. In Indian subcontinent it is called Eid-Ul-Fitr or Mithi Eid (मीठी ईद). Prayer time may vary as per Moon time, please refer to local prayer hall / Mosque for details. There are many websites which provide location based prayer time. Ramadan Kareem. Happy Ramadan.

अधिक मास / पुर्षोत्तम मास Adhik Month / Purshottam Month 2018

16th May – 13th June 2018 (or 30 April to 29 May if ending the months on the full moon): Adhik Maas (English translation is Extra Month) is the month inserted to Lunar Year about every 32.5 months to keep the Lunar and Solar year aligned.

Adhik Maas (Masa) is also known as Purshottam Maas, Londa Maas, Mala Maas (मल मास) and Malimmacha. Adhik Maas is NOT considered good for wedding or moving into new house (Gruh Pravesh / गृह प्रवेश). Various religious programs and special prayers are organised during the month at all the temples.

Adhik Masa as per Astronomy:
Moon takes 27.3 days to orbit around Earth. Earth takes 365.2422 days to orbit around Sun. However, Moon has to travel 2.2 days extra to line up with Earth and Sun to become full Moon again, due to the curve of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. This creates gap of 10.87 days per year between Lunar Year (354.372 days) and Sun Year (365.2422 days). To compensate this gap, an extra month is added after about every 32.5 months. This is seen in Hindu/Indian Lunar, Jewish, Buddhist Calendars.

Disclaimer: Though all the precautions are taken to calculate exact calendar (Christian, Jews, Parsi, Chinese) / Tithi or Lunar day (Hindu, Sikh, Buddisht, Jain, Muslim, Parsi) as per New Zealand Standard Time, there may be some differences across multiple sites / publications. This may be because of variation in calculating Sun Rise/Set and Moon Rise/Set timings.

Indian calendar (Panchang) explanation: First day after no Moon day (अमावस्या) is considered here as first day of Hindu Month. This is called Amant Calendar (अमान्त पंचांग). In few parts of India first day of Hindu Month is considered on one day after Full Moon (पूर्णिमा) and the calendar is known as Purnimant Calendar (पूर्णिमान्त पंचांग). Only month name changes in these two methods. Tithi still remains the same. For example, if the tithi is Shukla paksh Chaturthi (शुक्ल पक्ष चतुर्थी), it remains same in both the methods. We are committed to provide accurate information on our portal, however, we do not take any responsibility on accuracy of the calendar, events or Panchang published here.
