ITEMS OR PUJA SAMAGRI NEEDED TO FOR PRAYER PREPARATIONS
Specially used by Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhists in their rituals / prayers
- Cloth (Red or similar is preferred लाल – पीला कपडा)
- Deepak (Diya दिया)
- Agarbatti (अगरबत्ती)
- Kapoor (Camphor कपूर)
- Plates to keep sweets, coins, puja items पूजा की थाली
- Panchamrat पंचाम्रत (ingredients: Milk दूध, Ghee घी, Honey शहद, Curd दही, Sugar शक्कर)
- Fruits, Dry fruits, Nuts, Coconut सूखा मेवा, फल, नारियल
- Sweets मिठाई
- Flowers फूल, Durva grass (दूर्वा), Holy Basil / Tulsi (तुलसी)
- Water / Holy water गंगा जल, पानी का लोटा
- Betel leaves पान के पत्ते / Betel Nuts सुपारी
- Red thread मोली – धागा/ Kalawa
- Janeo जनेउ
- Decorative laces सजाने का सामान
- Kumkum (see below to make chemical free kumkum at home), Sandal paste, Turmeric powder कुमकुम, चंदन, हल्दी

- Stool / Table / Pooja Chowki / Aasan. आसन, पूजा पट, बाजोट Even clean floor with some cover is fine to keep deiti and other puja samagri. If prayers are performed in temple, this is usually organized by priest / temple committee.

- Karwa Chauth: Story / Katha book कथा की पुस्तक, Matthi for bhog, sindoor or kum kum, Karva (vessel filled with water), Channi छलनी
- Satyanarayan puja: Katha book कथा की पुस्तक (story book)
- Tarpan / Pitru Paksh shradhha / Death anniversaries: Black sesame (Til काले तिल), White flowers सफेद फूल, Sandalwood paste, Grass घास, पीतल का लोटा
These puja items / samagri are usually available at all the Indian grocery stores across New Zealand. Few stores may keep the items during the festival time.
Make chemical free KumKum at Home
कुमकुम बनाने की घरेलु विधी
Did you know Kum Kum powder is made of Turmeric or similar herb. It is dried and powdered with a very small portion of slaked lime, which turns the yellow color into red color. But now a days, it is mixed with chemicals which may be allergic to skin. It is known as kuṅkumam (Sanskrit कुंकूमम), kungumam (Tamil குங்குமம்), kumkuma (Telugu కుంకుమ), Kukum (Konkani कुकूम्), kunku (Marathi, Rajasthani, Gujarati कुंकू), kumkum (Bengali কুমকুম, Hindi कुमकुम), kunkuma (Kannada ಕುಂಕುಮ), kuṅkumam (Malayalam കുങ്കുമം).
Here are our three chosen methods to make KumKum at home:
Quick Kumkum
What you need:
- Turmeric powder हल्दी पाउडर: 2 spoons
- Slated lime / Chuna चूना/ Chunambu: The same which is used on paan / beter lead पान मे लगाने वाला चूना: 1/4th spoon (available at Indian grocery store)
- Lemon juice नींबू का रस: 1 spoon
- Water पानी: 2 spoons
How to make:
Mix it well and dry it. Thats it 🙂 Your home made chemical free kumkum is ready.
Kumkum / Sindoor
What you need:
- Turmeric powder: 100 grams
- Phitkari फीटकरी (Alum): 5 grams
- Suhaaga (Borax): 10-15 grams
- Lemon juice: 2 table spoons
- Sesame Oil तिल का तेल: 2 table spoons
How to make:
- Mix alum powder, borax powder and lemon juice
- Add turmeric powder and mix well to make paste
- Dry it for few days to make it powder
- Rub / moisten powder with sesame oil (just rub, do not try to make paste)
- Store in dry container
Kumkum with additional herbs
What you need:
- Turmeric powder हल्दी: 2 spoons
- Slated lime / Chuna चूना / Chunambu: The same which is used on paan / beter lead: 1/4th spoon (available at Indian grocery store)
- Lemon juice नीम्बू का रस: 1 spoon
- Water पानी: 2 spoons
- Sandal wood powder चंदन
- Saffron केसर
How to make:
Mix it well and dry it. Sandal wood powder and saffron gives it a cosmetic touch and different color.
